Goodbye to the Flat-Front!

Adrian

I am the first to admit it - I have been on the flat-front bandwagon for as long as I can remember; the word ‘pleats’ once made the hairs on my neck stand upright, my eyeballs retreat decidedly into their sockets, as if to eradicate any mental image of these ‘folded-eyesores’, and my lips purse in complete and under disgust. The ‘pleat’, particularly when joined with ‘pants’, had become a dirty word - a taboo, of sorts, among the fashion crowd.

Flash forward to 2006. Tom Ford has all but disappeared from the runways and Britney Spears has fallen from her iconic status, or rather, has crashed and burned onto the tabloid-frequenting, class-challenged B-list, next to Star Jones and Kimberly Stewart. It is a different world out there, so why are we wearing the same pants we wore in 1999?

The pleated waist, and its cousin, the paperbag waist, is the saviour to all this. Refreshingly loose, remarkably chic, this pleated pant looks right amongst falls layered, loose looks. When paired with a fitted top, it has a Katherine Hepburn-like quality to it, cinching in the waist with remarkable success. For narrow figures, it adds needed volume, while also giving fuller figures just enough leeway to keep things looking classy, not trashy.

If anything, it has a no-fuss, relaxed quality about it that makes it highly desirable. Think Mariah Carey’s pink, spandex mini dresses. Got it? Then think of the complete opposite. Now you’ve got it.

The Pleat Bandwagon is approaching…are your coming onboard?

-peace out!
