Prada S/S 2007 Milan

Leave it to Miuccia to shake things up. After a season that was apparently vomited on by neutrals and the God of Tent Dresses, Ms. Prada sends down this off-kilter collection of high-waisted shorts, fringed dresses, and shimmery head wraps reminiscent of a Sicilian(?)Cuban(?) grandmother.

While quite different than the recent offerings, the essence of Prada was visible in the un-specific and diverse sources of inspiration from which the designers draws. At first, the pairings may seem completely disjointed and even, at times, incompatible. I mean, what do rainbow-hued, fringed sandals have to do with a sparkly, black cocktail dress? As with most of her offerings, however, it is within no time that the “Has-Miuccia-gone-crazy?” sentiments have transformed into “Miuccia-is-a-complete-and-utter-genius!” assertions.

At times, the look was rural Italian and other times it veered into Native-American princess territory. Throughout all these incarnations, there were high-waisted minis and shorts, often belted to within an inch of their lives. Along with some of the short, printed dresses, these would look positively killer if paired with 20-something legs. In fact, the entire collection was decidedly young, right down to the bold use of brunt orange, teal, ruby, and green. In general, the message was short, shorter, and shortest, mixed together with an unidentifiable ethic sensibility.

Whether you liked this or not, we can all sleep better knowing what we will all be wearing in a few months.
