Okay, so today we had presentations in my Brand Management class. Instead of listening to the insightful presenters, I was concerned by the style – or lack thereof – of some business students. Hence, I have put forth a few recommendations. Unlike The Sartorialist from GQ, I don’t believe in “fashion rules”, but I thought a few pointers would go a long way.
For Girls:
Please, wear heels above 2″!

Yes, I know how I have talked about the return of the stumpy heel (as shown at Gucci S/S 2007), but business people have barely caught on to skinny jeans – never mind fashion-forward footwear! As such, please opt for a relatively high pump – you’re not 80 years old and you do not have a back problem – yet! And let’s not get started on the “You don’t know how much they hurt!” chatter. I’ve squeezed into vintage brogues that were 2 sizes too small and smiled like Joan Rivers after a face lift. If there’s a will, there’s a way!
Tuck in Your Blouse!

Okay, the untucked blouse is more of a personal dislike, but I thought I would mention it regardless. Nothing is sexier than a fitted skirt with a slim, tucked in blouse. It says, “I’m in control”, without any hint of skin. Throw on a skinny belt, in red, let’s say, and your good to go!
For Guys:
Keep it Stiff!

Get your mind out of the gutter, because I’m referring to your shirt collar. The only thing I hate more than a saggy, flimay, flopping collar are men’s crinkled, linen pants and both of these say the same thing – “distastefully disheveled”. Starch ‘em, use collar stays, scorch ‘em with the iron – I don’t care what you have to do, but please make sure they’re always at attention!
Shoulders, Shoulders, Shoulders!

I can’t tell you how many times I see guys wearing suit jackets that extend ridiculously beyond their shoulders. Do you want to look like you’re wearing a Joan Collins’ jacket from Dyansty? Scrap the whole arm-waving/back-enlarging pose that you do when buying a suit! Fitting shoulders are the single most important aspect of a good suit!
