Best of ’06: Breakthough Womenswear Designer of the Year

The Nominess…Cristophe Decarnin for Balmain, Gareth Pugh, and Jeremy Laing

Three young men – three very different looks. First up is Cristophe Decarnin at Balmain. While reviews were not the greatest for his S/S collection, I thought it was a really strong statement in a new direction for the legendary house. The metallic jodhpurs and floaty mini-dresses with the elaborate neck detailing were terrific. Besides, who can forget Audrey Tatou in that white dress? Next up is Gareth Pugh, who literally stole London Fashion Week with his mad, space-age collection of inflatable coats and silver trenches. It was outrageous, slightly unwearable, and everything that a London fashion show should be. Finally, we have new Canadian designer Jeremy Laing. Obviously Laing is playing in a completely different ball field than someone like Pugh – okay, likely a completely different ball field on a completely different planet. That said, his showing at NY fashion week was both on-trend (the loose vests, racer-back tanks, the drop-waist) and undeniably the essence of casual chic.

Ahh, young meat – there’s nothing like it.
