The Nominees…Vogue Italia February 2006: Heather Bratton by Steven Meisel, Purple Fashion Fall Winter 2006/2007 : Vincent Gallo by Terry Richardson, Vogue Italia September 2006: Hilary Rhoda by Steven Meisel This category was difficult, not out of abundance, but rather because of scarcity. With more magazines featuring PR-approved pictures of celebrities, it seems that all we’re seeing is more meaningless text and Sears-like portraits. Here are my 3 choices for best cover of the year.
First we have the February 2006 cover of Vogue Italia, featuring the lovely Heather Bratton. As you may know, Bratton passed away on July 22, 2006 in a fatal car crash. This is not a pity nomination. Rather, this cover is haunting, alluring, and literally “intense”. The next cover takes a much lighter approach to fashion, Purple Fashion featuring Vincent Gallo shot by Terry Richardson. In a year that saw that Balenciaga tulip dress in 272828 magazines and editorials, this was the one cover that for some strange reason, made it look different. Any ideas why? Finally, we another Vogue Italia cover shot by Miesel, this time the all-important September cover featuring Hilary Rhoda. I like that it said something more than “pretty”. And frankly, what better way to do it than with an AK-47?
