The Nominees…Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme, Raf Simons, Steven Cox and Daniel Silver at Duckie Brown
An easy category, simply because most of it is either commercial crap or Euro-trash. First up is every Hipster’s icon, Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme (Not including Hedi would be like being a “good” Christian and not citing the Pope as an inspiration…) That said, Slimane did make a conscious deicison this year to return to the formality he started with at Dior Homme. Besides, how can you not include Hedi when 2006 was the year Pete become a mainstream fashion icon? I mean, he was one of the trailblazers in cementing Doherty’s title as fashion It-boy. Oh, sorry, him and a few linear lines of an expensive white powder.
Next we have Raf Simons (the only designer to be included in both the Womenswear and Menswear categories). Let’s face it, only Raf could make your dad’s pleated shorts and your mom’s mom shorts look so edgy and utilitarian.
Finally, I have opted to put Steven Cox and Daniel Silver of Duckie Brown into this category. Their signature take on volume and bold colours could easily have become the wardrobe for the next T.I. or Jay Z video, but instead became a chic assortment of washed-out, easy sweaters and loose trousers.
