The Nominees…Black Nail Polish, Red Lips, Long (likely faux) Lashes
Beauty this year was all about cliches - the Goth, the Hitchcock Heroine, and the Flirt. In a year that saw nail polish spark an eBay bidding war, I thought it would be appropriate to put black nail polish on the list. You wore it in 2006 and chances are so did your mom - although I bet neither of you wore the Chanel Black Le Vernis No. 219. All in all, talk about a way to ditch the gothic dimension or what?
Next is the red lip, which a handful of designers push every season without much of a response from the general public. This year, however, the red lip was welcomed with less criticism than usual, possibly thanks to stars like Dita Von Teese, Scarlett Johansson, and, as much as I cringe at this admission, Christina Aguilera.
Last up are long, dramatic lashes - from articles on lash extensions in Vogue to Twiggy resurfacing as a judge on America’s Next Top Model, lashes were thick and luscious in 2006. I heard about pain for beauty, but are we talking about blindess for beauty, too?
