It’s always Catch 22 in the game of fashion. Stick to a mantra of slow evolution and you’re labeled the Tony Bennett of fashion week – move things in a new direction and you risk being snaked at for diverging from “what you do best”. This was the predicament I wrestled with while seeing the Ruffian Fall/Winter 2007/2008 show.
Gone was some of the couture-esque drama of the spring 2007 collection. Instead, Wolk and Claude Morais streamlined their offering to Katherine Hepburn-approved high-waisted wool trousers, miles of black leather on skirts, pants, and dresses, and a ruffle or two to remind the audience what show they were watching. It was partly sleek urban vixen, executed with a romantic flourish. A perfect reflection, in fact, of the jaded, albeit still hopeful, reality of the New York single woman.
