4. Dries Van Noten
It’s no small feat amalgamating the high school jock, the art student, and the valedictorian into a cohesive, let alone desirable, look. It’s an aesthetic that no one owns as strongly - or does as well - as Dries Van Noten. This season, he married texture - quilted nylon, embroidered satin -with Asian prints. It’ a look that challenges social stereotypes as much as ideals of beauty. Brilliant.
3. Marc Jacobs
A collection strewn from left field is not necessarily a recipe for success. That is, of course, unless it has the panache to alter the lens through which we define modernity. For fall/winter 2007, Jacobs did just that. His blatantly retro collection of well-brimmed woman wearing sharply tailored jackets and trousers was retro without verging into the dated realm of ladylike. It’s no surprise that it was a mood carried over into the European shows.
