Best of ‘06: Fashion It-Word of ‘06

The Nominees…The “Almond Toe”, “Volume”, “Skinny”
Chances are, if you bought shoes in 2006, they came with an “Almond Toe.” With it’s sleeker shape than 2005’s more severely rounded toes, it struck the perfect balance between femininity and strength. Besides, what more fitting than to name a shoe after a food?

The rise of such shoes can likely be attributed to the second It-word: “volume”. Sure, this term has been thrown around for a couple of seasons now, but never it been so well received - or maybe well pushed? Either way, from the Balenciaga coat to the numerous puffball dresses/skirts hanging in your closest, you likely wore volume in 2006. And heard about it - a lot - for that matter.

How ironic that “skinny” was also an It-word? From skinny, legging-like pants to more fashion chatter and debate about skinny than at a Weight Watcher’s meeting, “skinny” was a fashion It-word in ‘06. Though more likely than not, it was preceeded by the name of a various celebrity/model, as well as one of the following: too, way too, disgustingly, scary, anorexic, blah , blah, blah. Deep-rooted jealousy, is all I say.

I think Skinny had the best run for 2006, but all of those trends will probably be toast in ‘07.

“Deep-rooted jealousy, is all I say.”

I agree
