Tonight I went to the preview screening of Fashion File’s new reality TV show Host Hunt (http://www.fashionfile.com/hostHunt.html) (FYI: It’s a new CBC reality show created to replace Tim Blanks, the retiring, and beloved, Fashion File host) Held at Suite 106 in the Toronto club district, the venue was fairly swanky. And what would such a fashionable event be without free champagne and the shi-shi-est of all shi-shi hors d’oeuvres? You know, the kind where you have to ask what it is, or else the conversation goes on, like:
“Oh! Chicken balls! Yum.”
“Ummm…no, bud. Roasted polenta topped with shredded veggies.”
“Oh, ya. That was my second guess.”
As for the show itself, half an hour seems fairly too short to showcase challenges with enough meat to satisfy the audience. This week’s challenge involved a simple “Tell us why you would make a good host?” rant in front a two-way mirror. Hardly the stuff of thrilling TV and hardly the justification, in my opinion, to kick off one of the contestants. Most reality shows throw the contestants in head first during the first week. For one, it’s fun to see some slackers choke and drown, but it also offers the judging panel enough material to make an informed decision about the candidates.
As for the contestants, I was slightly under whelmed. Some don’t seem to exude the passion required to do the job, although this could be solely my unfounded initial thoughts. The judges were their usual harsh selves and while it’s hard to say much else at this point, one in particular seemed too intent on channeling the always pleasant Simon Cowell.
The next few episodes will hopefully prove to be more insightful. As insightful as a 30-minute show can be, I suppose. Fashion File Host Hunt will air on CBC on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm EST.

oh i love those hors d’oeuvres, where you have to look incredibly carefully to actually find food on your plate. very chic. and minimalist, or something. not my approach to eating, but live and let live.

Unless I remember wrong, didn’t you try out for this? Did you catch yourself on tv
I would’ve loved to see more of the audition tapes on the first episode - but oh well - As you said, its only a half hour long.
