Combing architectural flourishes and Arctic inspirations in the nebulous domain of American sportswear is no easy task; excess pleats can easily become fussy, 3-D experimentation is deemed unwearable, and attempts at modernizing American sportswear are often largely lackadaisical, failing under the weight of an exacting history. Jeremy Laing’s work is victim to none of the aforementioned.
His spring/summer 2008 collection (watch above) celebrated this feat. So a simple sheath with an enveloping, concave-cut band came in an earthy, so-called “rock” fabric and a classic white blouse was reinterpreted with an armour-like bib over the bust. At 27, his work displays the lenity of hand that eludes designers many years his senior. And with the ’subtly unexpected’ quickly become a trademark, this Canadian is one to watch.
