Why Long Feels so Wrong

I think every time I opened up US weekly last year, all I saw were young starlets in various gowns. Yes, gowns - with their long trains and floor-sweeping hemlines - were the unmatched uniform of the red carpet. Until recently, I thought of the gown as the premiere/party ensemble as well. But looking at this picture of So You Think You Can Dance’s Cat Deely, long suddenly feels so wrong. Don’t get me wrong, a form-fitting, mermaid-hem gown is classic and timelessly beautiful, but now feels like the time to show a bit of leg and loosen up the silhouette. Why have we traded in Gisele’s waves for Louise Brook’s blunt bob? Because pretty is only pretty for so long. And then it becomes boring and repetitive. And frankly, long gowns give off that same feeling.

For the average person on a regular day, this doesn’t mean much. But for the next formal event, don’t skip straight to the gowns. Do like the beautiful Rose Byrne, and wear a short, shiny shift. After all, when it comes to fashion, Jennifer Aniston does enough boring for all of us.
